The Meeting That Could Have Been an Email
一封邮件就能搞定的会议
Mark joined the 9 a.m. meeting with his coffee in one hand and his notebook in the other. The invitation said “Quick sync — 30 minutes max.” He had heard that before.
The meeting began with twelve minutes of small talk about the weather, followed by a screen-share that refused to work. “Can everyone see my screen?” asked the host, for the fourth time. Nobody could.
When the slides finally appeared, they contained exactly three bullet points. Mark read them in eleven seconds. The group then spent seventy minutes discussing each bullet in circles, arriving at a conclusion that was identical to the original slide.
At 10:30, the host wrapped up cheerfully. “Great alignment, everyone. Let’s schedule a follow-up to circle back on the action items.” Mark looked at his notebook. It contained one sentence: “This could have been an email.”
That afternoon, Mark wrote a three-line email summarizing the meeting and sent it to the team. His manager replied instantly: “Perfect. So clear. Why didn’t we just do this in the first place?” Mark took a sip of coffee and chose not to answer.
